Research

Aid Via Action (AVA) has a strong commitment to research in Low Income Countries (LICs).  We believe that understanding the current issues facing hospitals in LICs is pivotal in attempting to provide corrective actions.

At this juncture, AVA is not able to provide financial support to fund individual research activities.  However, medical students who are interested in a research activity in a LIC can be mentored directly from Dr. Huerta.

These are the requirements:

  1. Must be a medical student from an accredited medical school in the United States

  2. Must contact the Global Health Office (or equivalent) at their institution and obtain permission to undertake a specific project

  3. Students MUST secure the appropriate funds for the project including traveling to Guatemala and back to their home state.  As well as room and board in Guatemala.

  4. Must obtain IRB approval from their institution to work on the specific project.  Dr. Huerta will aid with this.

  5. At this stage, only projects related to general surgery will be considered

  6. For the time being, only projects at the Hospital Nacional in San Benito, El Peten, Guatemala will be considered.

  7. Dr. Huerta will obtain permission from the Hospital Nacional in San Benito Guatemala from the hospital director and the chief of surgery to proceed with the project.

  8. Students will be expected to present the finding of the research activity at a national conference

  9. Students will be expected to submit a manuscript for publication regarding the findings of the research activity

If interested, please submit a research proposal via e-mail at: aid.via.action@gmail.com.
