Dr. Huerta is a professor of surgery and a current practicing general surgeon. He began his volunteer activities in global health in 2014 in Northern Guatemala. Over the past seven years, multiple manuscripts have been published with a combined effort between medical students and the Hospital Nacional in San Benito. His goal in global health is to minimize the disparities in health care delivery between low- and middle-income countries compared to high-income countries. The initial goal will be to assist with delivery of equipment to perform laparoscopy for common operations such as gallbladder disease and appendicitis. His favorite books related to global health include Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder, A Path Appears by Nicholas Kristoff & Sheryl WuDunn, and The Most Good You Can Do by Peter Singer.
